Why Our Bulbs?

The features which separate horticultural bulbs from street lights are how they deal with the matters of color spectrum and power.  The goal is to harness the power of HID lights to mimic the sun.  The original HID technology many bulb manufacturers base their designs on were the municipal application.  In the early years, indoor farmers used modified street lights.  The lower powered and less balanced spectrum bulbs that many of our competitors offer are closer to the street light than the sun.   Many of the current bulbs on the horticultural market today resemble this common street light concept.  They had good output at 100 lm/watt or so but poor in balanced spectrum.  Today power has often come sacrificing the balanced color spectrum.  Positronics solves this problem with our complete line of HPS and Metal Halide horticultural lamps. 

Plants respond to two major features of High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting, lumens and spectrum, the goal being a balanced color spectrum with high lumen output.  Red, blue and orange light are the most desirable in the spectrum and need to be present in sufficient amounts to promote suitable healthy growth.  Metal Halide bulbs produce an almost perfect balance.  In the past the challenge has always been that Metal Halide bulbs haven’t produced the lumens to match that of HPS bulbs.  High Pressure Sodium bulbs put out over 25% more lumens, but does not achieve the balanced spectrum.  At Positronics Lighting Systems, we have approached these challenges in three ways; a metal halide with more lumen output, an HPS with higher blue spectrum, and a combination of HPS and Metal Halide in one bulb.  

With an added blue spectrum, our HPS bulbs can produce the same lumens as our competitors without sacrificing anything.  Our Metal Halide bulbs have an increased lumen output of nearly 10% above the competition.  Our Dual-Arc bulb combines a high output 600 Watt High Pressure Sodium bulb coupled with a 400 Watt Metal Halide bulb in the same housing, giving you 1000 Watts of the most balanced and complete spectrum available.  At 120,000 lumens it rivals standard 1000 Watt HPS bulbs but has a spectrum far superior.
